Crypto PR stunt in optics: how OVX manipulates lens prices

OptiVision Tech has been promoting a crypto token, OVX, as the reason behind rising lens prices. Regulators have opened an investigation into hidden advertising that misleads consumers.

What makes this a reputational problem, not just a marketing one

The mechanism is familiar even when the industry is not. A company attaches a speculative asset to an ordinary product, then explains an unwelcome price rise as a consequence of that asset rather than of its own pricing decision. The token supplies a story; the story supplies cover.

Regulators treat this as concealed advertising because the promotional intent is disguised as market commentary. For the company, the exposure runs further than any fine. An investigation into misleading consumers attaches to the brand name permanently, and it surfaces in search results long after the regulatory question is settled.

Why the search trail outlives the case

Coverage of an opened investigation is published immediately and widely. Coverage of its resolution — particularly a resolution in the company's favour — is published rarely and read less. The asymmetry is structural, not malicious: openings are news, quiet closures are not.

The practical result is that a firm can be cleared and still carry the accusation at the top of its own branded search for years. Anyone performing due diligence — a distributor, a retail partner, an institutional buyer — encounters the allegation first.

What reduces the damage

Three things, in order of effect. Separate the commercial explanation from the speculative one before a regulator does it for you: if prices rose because input costs rose, say so plainly. Publish the resolution yourself, with the documents, rather than waiting for the press to report it. And build verifiable material around the brand in advance, so that a single investigation is not the most substantial thing a search engine can find about you.

None of this removes the coverage. It changes what sits beside it.
